I cannot express enough how important it is to keep your coffee gear clean. I mean, you shower everyday…right? So why not take a few minutes to keep your gear shiny & clean too? The fact is, Alberta water is HARD. So you need to make sure you’re using proper cleaning products to ensure what you’re brewing your coffee in is as clean as possible.
I specifically bought a fridge that has a built in water filtration system. For many, a simple Brita system will do the trick. Don’t use Reverse Osmosis water to brew your coffee, as that has removed all of the good minerals that actually help with the brew process. Here’s a great link from Manual Coffee Brewing on that (link). There are also some great water products out there like Third Wave Water which I have yet to try but am dying to get my hands on some. I’ll do a more detailed blog on water another day. Another thing I do is I also make sure to replace my filter in my espresso machine frequently since it gets a lot of use.
If you’re looking for a good cleaner for your gear I would suggest picking up some Cafiza. You can grab it at Eight Ounce (link) Just fill up your sink with a bit of this and let your gear soak. Or put a small amount into your brewer (eg: Chemex), fill with warm water, and then scrub. Rinse well and then dry your brewer.
This stuff is great, and does an amazing job with just a little amount.
So please for the love of coffee, and the love of your gear, spend a few moments and clean your stuff. You’ll be glad you did. Enjoy the weekend.
